Explore the rainforest near Tortuguero National Park on a guided night walk, a different way to experience the area after sunset.
The tour takes place on a private trail managed by ASVO, with small groups of up to 10 people. The trail is flat and easy to follow, making it suitable for most visitors.
As you walk, your guide helps you spot nocturnal wildlife such as frogs, insects, reptiles, and small mammals that are more active at night. They also explain how the rainforest and wetland systems function, following the conservation approach used by SINAC.
The focus of the tour is observation and understanding rather than covering long distances. It’s a simple way to see how the forest changes after dark while walking at a steady, relaxed pace.
I joined the night tour and found it to be a straightforward way to see how the forest changes after dark. The walk takes place on a private trail, and the group was small, which made it easier to follow the guide and move at a steady pace.
We were given flashlights and rubber boots before starting, which helped with visibility and the muddy sections of the trail. Along the way, the guide pointed out frogs, insects, and a few reptiles that I would not have noticed on my own.
The tour is not physically demanding, but you do need to pay attention while walking in low light. Overall, it’s a calm activity focused on observation and learning rather than covering a long distance.

Taking a Night Tour is a good option for families who want another way to explore the rainforest.
With a guide leading the way, you can spot nocturnal species like frogs, insects, and small reptiles, while also learning how animals adapt to low-light conditions. The experience is simple and focused, giving you a better sense of how the forest functions at night.
Time on the night tour often stands out because of the small, quiet moments rather than big highlights. Walking through the forest after dark changes how you notice things—the sounds are different, and much of the activity happens close to the ground or in the trees above. With the help of a guide, you begin to recognize patterns, like where frogs tend to gather or how insects respond to light. In areas near Tortuguero National Park, these details come together to give a clearer sense of how the ecosystem functions at night, making the experience feel more personal and easier to remember.
