The Monteverde Night Tour is a 2-hour guided tour at night in the Monteverde forest in Costa Rica. We take small groups of tourists into the woods at night with flashlights and a tour guide searching for nocturnal animals.
We run these Monteverde Night Tours twice per night, at 6 pm and 8 pm. Each night tour takes about 2 hours, and we go on foot, but it’s a light walk with multiple stops as we find animals.
The activity is low-intensity, suitable for ages 4+.
You might have visited the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve and wondered why you did not see many animals. That is one of the most frequently asked questions from people who visit the park, and it makes a lot of sense. After all, many people travel to Monteverde to see wildlife.
Monteverde is home to 100 mammal species, 400 bird species, 120 reptilian and amphibian species, and thousands of insects. However, more than 80% of wildlife in Monteverde is active during the night, not during the day, which is why it’s tough to see animals during the daytime.
When the sunsets, these animals come out in search of food and shelter to spend the night.
With the help of a local tour guide and flashlights, it’s relatively easy to find some of these species in the forest.
People often ask us, “What kind of animals do you see in a night tour in Monteverde?”
As a general rule, you can see up to five species of mammals, between one and three species of reptiles and amphibians, between one and five species of birds, and many species of insects. The most popular types of mammals you can see on a night tour include monkeys, agoutis, coatis, sloths, and kinkajous. You can also find the fantastic red-eyed frog, a beautiful frog species considered one of the most amazing animals in Costa Rica.
On a Monteverde Night Tour, the most popular bird species we regularly see include toucans, Mot-mots, and sometimes even the impressive resplendent Quetzal. During the night tour, these species will be asleep, so you will not see them actively moving, but instead, you will see them sleeping in a tree.
In the insect realm, you will typically see a lot of types in a Monteverde Night Tour, including Walking Sticks (impressive insects that resemble a 5 to 12-inch stick), as well as Tarantulas and Scorpions. Don’t worry, though; our guides are well-trained to ensure safety goes first. We will never expose you to these creatures in an unsafe manner. We will show them to you at a prudent distance, avoiding contact with them.
Another stunning creature of the night we regularly see on a Monteverde Night Tour is the famous Green Viper. This beautiful, poisonous snake comes out at night to prey on birds and other smaller animals. If you’re lucky, you might even see it hunting (or even ingesting) a small animal.
Every night is different, and with nature, there is never a guarantee of what you will see on your Monteverde Night Tour, but we typically see the above types of animals to a degree. You can also see other clients’ experiences here, on our main page on TripAdvisor.
At the Monteverde Night Tour, you will feel right at home with our friendly and clever guides, who go above and beyond to do their job at 110%, telling you everything there is to know about the local wildlife with little jokes to make every minute of the tour very relaxed.
Learn from the experts as our skilled guides have extensive knowledge of wildlife and nature, and they will answer every possible question you may have about Monteverde’s local wildlife.

Cancel at least 24 hours before the day of your night tour, and we will refund you fully, no questions asked. We want to be sure you have a great time during your stay in Monteverde, and that is why we do not want you to commit to a tour unless you are sure you can make it.

If you don’t have a car to get to the park, we can provide a free shuttle service from your Monteverde Hotel/Airbnb to the park and back to your Hotel/Airbnb. Our shuttles are large vans with A/C, and they pick up/drop off multiple customers simultaneously.
We have specific pickup times depending on your location, so after you book online, you will first receive your confirmation email, and then (a few hours later), you will get a follow-up email with the pickup time at your Hotel/Airbnb.
On the way back from the park to your Hotel/Airbnb, our shuttles also leave the park at specific times (usually every hour), so you may need to wait at the park’s reception for a while after you finish your activity. We work like this to minimize the number of cars on the road to keep up with our gas emissions target to remain a sustainable park.
Please note that some Hotel/Airbnb’s locations are advertised as part of Monteverde, when in reality, they are far away from town. And they might be outside our service area. If that is your case, we will let you know via a follow-up email, so that we can try to find a solution for you or cancel your reservation with a full refund.
We have a flexible cancelation policy.
After you book online, you will get an automatic confirmation email. This confirmation email contains a “Cancel” button, so you can easily cancel online without talking to anyone (no need to provide explanations).
If you cancel at least 24 hours before the activity day, you will get a full refund (otherwise, there will not be a refund). For example, if your tour is on February 28 at 8:30 AM, you should cancel before February 27 at 0:00 AM to get a refund. You will not get a refund if you cancel on February 27 at 0:01 AM or later.
On the other hand, this activity generally operates under most weather conditions (including rain) unless it is risky for participants (such as during heavy thunderstorms). If you arrive at the park and the weather prevents us from letting you in, we can try to reschedule or give you a full refund.
